T O P I C R E V I E WBill NelsonI am wondering how many shuttle flights have had Beta cloth patches made for them. I have seen an STS-5 Beta patch for sale in an auction. Also Lockheed Martin has an EMU on display in its Denver Headquarters that has an STS-41C Beta cloth emblem on it. Do all shuttle EVA missions have beta cloth emblems made up for the EMUs? Also has anyone ever seen any NASA worm beta cloth patches on the market? spaced outGood question. There were a couple from Walt Salyer's collection at the Aurora spring 2006 2nd chance auction. There were some amazing items in that auction but eBay's live service was playing up badly and the result was chaos for bidders. I did manage to get a couple of things myself but missed many superb items. Here's the Shuttle-era beta cloth auctioned items I can find in my own notes from that auction and Lunar Legacies: EMU logo beta cloth patch:Aurora Apr 8 2006 2nd chance auction lot 9249NASA 'worm' logo beta cloth patch:Aurora Apr 8 2006 2nd chance auction lot 9250STS-5 beta cloth patch: Lunar Legacies Mar 14, 2009 lot 439bengutteryThese sold for $300, 225, and 250 respectively. I think I bid on all of them. These aren't exactly beta cloth though. You can see from the photos that the weave is not nearly as fine. Go4LaunchI'm fortunate enough to have the STS-5 and EVA emblems. I know what Ben means, but I'm not sure if it's a finer weave (maybe), or just that the threads aren't coated with Teflon. The fabric is dull rather than having that Beta cloth sheen. I'd be very interested to find out what the material is. Robert PearlmanI believe the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) outer layer is Ortho-Fabric, a blend of GORE-TEX, Kevlar, and Nomex, rather than Beta cloth fiberglass fabric. It would be plausible then that the patches are silk-screened onto Ortho-Fabric as well.
